None of us live in a timeless vacuum; we're all shaped and influenced by events that came before the present--whether in our personal lives or on a larger societal scale. This should be true of the characters in our fiction (of any genre) too, and is certainly true of the real people in our personal essays and memoirs. How can you use historical research to enhance your writing project--whether or not it's historically based? Add depth and interest to your creative writing projects--contemporary or historical; mainstream or genre (mystery, fantasy, sci fi, horror, romance); fictional or nonfictional--with tried and true techniques of historical novelists.
